Mactan-Cebu int'l airport to get new navigation aid
The Mactan-Cebu-International Airport will soon get a boost in its safety capabilities with a navigational aid upgrade, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said Friday.
In a statement, the CAAP said the upgraded navigational guidance system can help pilots locate and land on the runway in bad weather and low visibility.
CAAP director general William Hotchkiss III said this would replace the 22-year-old Doppler VHF Omni-Directional Radio Range and Distance Measuring Equipment (DVOR/DME) installed in Cebu in 1993.
The upgrade is a project between CAAP and a joint venture of Philcox Philippines Inc. and Indra Australia Pty. Ltd.
Philcox and Indra Australia won the project with a bid of P48,727,112.85 for the supply, delivery, and commission with flight check of the system.
Also, the project includes incidental civil works such as:
- removal of the existing DVOR/DME system
- underground power, and data cables
- installation of new underground power and fiber optic cables
- grounding, electrical, and mechanical as detailed on the drawings
- rehabilitation of existing Doppler VOR counterpoise and shelter system
DVOR/DME is a short-range radio navigation system that helps an aircraft determine its position and stay on course.
It uses radio signals sent by a network of fixed ground radio beacons, with the receiver using radio frequencies in the Very High Frequency (VHF) band. — Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
