5 missing as Davao del Sur store collapsed due to quake —governor

Five people are still missing and presumed trapped inside a grocery store that collapsed in Padada, Davao del Sur following Sunday's magnitude 6.9 earthquake, a local official said Monday.

Interviewed on Unang Balita, Davao del Sur Governor Douglas Cagas said a body has already been retrieved from the establishment while five people are still being searched for.

"We're still hoping na buhay pa," he said. "Mayroon pang lima sa ilalim."

In a separate report by Susan Enriquez, authorities have yet to determine the  identity of the retrieved body from the grocery store.

Another fatality has been reported in the town of Matanao, also in Davao del Sur, according to Cagas.

He said he received information from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office that there were two fatalities due to the quake—one from Matanao and one from Padada.

On Sunday, however, the Bureau of Fire Protection said three bodies retrieved from the collapsed grocery store in Padada.

Matanao Mayor Vincent Fernandez confirmed that a six-year-old resident also died in his town, bringing the initial death toll from the quake to at least four as of Monday morning. —Dona Magsino/KBK, GMA News
