Cainta Mayor Nieto auctions shoes to raise assistance funds for residents

Cainta Mayor Kit Nieto has resorted to auctioning off his shoes to raise assistance funds for residents not covered by government's Social Amelioration Program.

On his Facebook account, the mayor said the allocation given to Cainta covers only a fraction of the population, and the municipality does not have enough funds to shoulder assistance for the rest.

"Ang daming hindi nabigyan ng SAC form assistance sa atin.. kasi 37,000+ yung allocation ng cainta tas 320,000 ang tao sa atin. Wala naman tayong perang tulad ng Pasig na kayang tustusan yung mga hindi na cover ng dswd program," he wrote.

"Naisip kong mag auction ng ilang gamit ko tas yung proceeds bigay ko sa mga hindi na cover.. makatulong kahit paano," he added.

Nieto added he plans to auction three pairs a day until he runs out, or until the coronavirus is contained.

Last March, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) started distributing social amelioration card forms which will be used as the basis of local authorities in providing aid to the families who would benefit from the emergency subsidy program.

Those who will be included will receive cash and non-cash monthly assistance amounting to P5,000 to 8,000 for two months.

Many Filipinos are facing loss of income as the entire Luzon was placed under enhanced community quarantine to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The Philippines has reported 4,932 cases of COVID-19 as of Monday. 315 patients have died, while 242 have recovered.
