DOH probes alleged food poisoning incident at South Cotabato campaign rally
The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday said it is conducting a thorough investigation on the alleged food poisoning incident that led to the hospitalization of more than 70 residents in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.
“The DOH through the Center for Health Development Soccsksargen is working with local health officers to care for patients while the matter is investigated thoroughly,” the department said in a statement.
At least 77 residents reportedly ate at a rally then suffered from vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pains on Sunday, according to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
The DOH then advised the public and event organizers to always inspect any kind of food that will be served, adding that food gets easily spoiled especially during hot weather.
“Follow food safety guidelines, including wearing of food-grade gloves, hair net, mouth covers; hand and utensil washing/sterilization; use of fresh produce; and avoiding the mixing of cooked and uncooked products. Store food in cool and dry places away from direct sunlight. As much as possible, keep food refrigerated until consumption,” it said.
The DOH said individuals who experience any symptoms including stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever after consumption of a meal, must consult the nearest clinic or hospital.
Meanwhile, the local government in Lake Sebu has given assistance to the affected residents in the form of medicines and dextrose.
