PCG takes part in release of 167 sea turtles in Batangas

The Philippine Coast Guard took part in the release of 167 sea turtles at Barangay Puting Buhangin, San Juan, Batangas on Sunday.

According to a statement, the 512th Coast Guard Auxiliary Squadron organized an activity for the release of the Olive Ridley sea turtles, which had been classified as a “vulnerable” species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List in 2007.

“With sea turtle populations facing numerous threats, the noble cause is a crucial step in fostering a sustainable marine environment in San Juan,” said the PCG in their statement.

“The 512th Coast Guard Auxiliary Squadron has a proud legacy in turtle conservation, dedicated to safeguarding coasts and promoting marine well-being. Through various initiatives, they make a positive impact on the ecosystems they serve, embodying a commitment to environmental conservation,” it added.

In 2022, the Philippines was named the 7th best snorkeling destination in the world due to its reefs and marine life.

Sea turtles, in particular, were pointed out by tourist guides as marine life that should be treated as co-inhabitants rather than attractions. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
