Earthquakes jolt Calayan, Cagayan

At least two earthquakes some five hours apart struck Calayan, Cagayan on Saturday.

The first quake had a magnitude of 5.2 and occurred at 9:34 a.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 20.11°N, 121.07°E - 103 km N 24° W of Calayan, Cagayan.

It had a depth of 25 km and was tectonic in origin. Intensity I was felt in Claveria, Cagayan, PHIVOLCS said.

No damage is expected from the quake, but PHIVOLCS warned of possible aftershocks.

Then at 2:42 p.m., PHIVOLCS reported that a 4.9-magnitude quake also struck the area of Calayan town.

Its epicenter was located at 19.33°N, 121.26°E - 023 km N 72° W of Calayan.

It was also tectonic in origin but compared to the first quake, it was more shallow with a depth of 10 kms.

Aftershocks and damage were not expected, PHIVOLCS said.

The earthquakes come as Cagayan and other northern Luzon provinces battle inclement weather due to the effects of the southwest monsoon or habagat and Tropical Storm Crising, which exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday morning.— VAL/VDV, GMA Integrated News
