A tourist police officer in Dumaguete City died while in post-duty therapeutic and exercise routine.

The 48-year-old policeman suffered from shortness of breath during a fun diving activity evening on August 5, 2025.

He was taken to the Holy Child Hospital but expired there.

Based on police investigation, the fun diving was part of the post-duty therapeutic and exercise routine done at a beachfront in Barangay Calindagan.

A companion of the policeman, who requested anonymity, said that they proceeded to the mouth of Banica River. But when they reached an area estimated to be from 15 feet to 20 feet deep, their other companion noticed that the policeman started signaling using a flashflight.

The signs were described to be part of things learned to deal with emergency situations.

The group decided to swim back to shore.

The policeman was described to be conscious, but was having a difficulty in breathing.

They were met by individuals on board a pumpboat and personnel of the Coast Guard for assistance in going back to the shore.
