Some Ifugao courts to suspend Sept. 2 work in commemoration of Yamashita surrender


Some courts in Ifugao will suspend work on Tuesday, September 2 in commemoration of the surrender of Imperial Japanese Army General Tomoyuki Yamashita, according to the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday.

 

 

 

In a post, the SC said the following courts will suspend work:

  • Lagawe, Ifugao Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 14;
  • Banaue, Ifugao RTC Branch 34; and
  • Municipal CIrcuit Trial Courts in Lagawe-Hingyon in Lagawe; Banaue-Hungduan-Mayoyao in Banaue; and Lamut-Kiangan-Asipulo-Tinoc in Lamut.

 

Yamashita surrendered in Kiangan, Ifugao weeks after the announcement of Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945 during World War II.

His surrender is remembered every September 3 which has been declared as a special working public holiday throughout the country as per Republic Act No. 11216.

Yamashita was later found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to death in 1946. —Joahna Lei Casilao/KG, GMA Integrated News
