Typhoon Tino batters Visayas
Floods, toppled trees, and soil erosion were reported as Typhoon Tino (international name: Kalmaegi) battered some areas in the Visayas, according to reports on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita on Wednesday.
Cebu
In Cebu Province, residents were seen staying on the second floor of their houses to save themselves from the rising floods, Jhomer Apresto reported.
Mananga River in Talisay overflowed, forcing residents living under the bridge to evacuate.
Some parked vehicles were swept away by strong current.
In Liloan town, residents also climbed onto the roof of their houses. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
Power interruptions were encountered in the northern portion of Cebu Province, according to a report of GMA Regional TV’s Fe Marie Dumaboc.
In Carmen, Tino’s winds toppled trees. As Tino made landfall over Borbon town, the roofs of some houses were blown away.
Up to waist-deep floods were reported in Danao City. A strong current of flood also hit Compostela town, sweeping away a fire truck.
Kotkot River also swelled.
Leyte
In the province of Leyte, power supply was also a problem after several posts collapsed during Tino’s onslaught, according to a report of GMA Regional TV’s Nikko Sereno.
More police were deployed to help in the clearing operation in Abuyog town due to the damaged houses and toppled trees.
In Javier, some residents were seen doing repairs on their homes.
Residents in Mahaplag town were having a hard time cleaning their houses from mud and floodwaters due to water supply issues.
Some of them were drying grains of rice that got wet amid the heavy rain and flooding.
Negros Oriental
In Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental, houses were submerged after a river overflowed. A strong current was observed under a bridge in Barangay Buenavista.
A river in La Libertad town also swelled, affecting a nearby market.
Bohol
Strong winds and big waves were reported in Panglao, Bohol. Despite the bad weather condition, some tourists were seen swimming in the area.
According to the television news report, a state of calamity was declared in Guiuan, Eastern Samar and Silago, Southern Leyte.
Negros Occidental
Forced evacuation was implemented in coastal areas in Bacolod City in Negros Occidental, according to a report of GMA Regional TV’s Adrian Prietos. Power supply was also interrupted in the city.
Due to the strong winds, some trees toppled at Burgos Public Cemetery and Bacolod Public Plaza.
Some houses in San Enrique town were also submerged in flood.
Iloilo
Trees also toppled in some northern Iloilo areas, according to a report by John Sala of GMA Regional TV.
In Sara town, a tree fell on a power cable resulting in an outage. Some roads also became impassable due to toppled trees.
The roof near a seawall in San Dionisio town was scrapped by the strong winds.
Floods were also reported in Roxas City.
At the Dumangas Port, trucks were stranded due to suspended roro trips.
Capiz
Meanwhile in Capiz, some roads became impassable due to soil erosion.
A rider in Pontevedra town was killed after a tree fell on their motorcycle.
From Visayas, Tino headed for Palawan, where Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 was raised in El Nido on Wednesday.
The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Wednesday night or Thursday early morning, according to PAGASA. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA Integrated News
