PHIVOLCS: Minor strombolian activity, short-lived lava fountaining observed at Mayon Volcano
Another minor strombolian activity was observed at the crater of Mayon Volcano on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.
This is the second activity recorded on Friday, May 1, 2026.
The second minor strombolian activity occurred at 7:39 p.m. while a short-lived lava fountaining was recorded at 8:05 p.m. The footages were captured from the newly-restored Ligao Observation Station (VMLI) and the Mayon Volcano Observatory.
"These events generated plumes that rose approximately 300 meters above the crater before drifting west-southwest," PHIVOLCS said.
"Effusive eruption at Mayon Volcano persists on its 116th consecutive day, producing incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), locally known as “uson”, and frequent rockfalls," the agency added.
The first strombolian activity of the day occurred at the summit crater around 2:41 a.m. and generated ash plumes approximately 100 meters above the crater before drifting west-southwest.
The National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) to issue an alert for Mayon Volcano on Friday afternoon.
PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano and entry into the 6-km Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited. — BAP, GMA News
