Ashfall hits parts of Albay due to Mayon's increased volcanic activity
Increased volcanic activity was observed over the Mayon Volcano on Saturday, causing ash to fall over some areas in the province of Albay.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), an episode of lava flow collapse-fed pyroclastic density current took place at the volcano around 5:38 p.m.
PHIVOLCS said that ashfall is affecting the towns of Camalig and Guinobatan in Albay.
“Estimated pyroclastic density current (PDC) run-out is four kilometers,” PHIVOLCS said.
In a statement, the Philippine Red Cross said they are currently on the ground and in coordination with local authorities and disaster response agencies to monitor the situation.
“We strongly advise all residents in affected communities to remain on high alert. Please avoid entering designated danger zones, especially near gullies and river channels where fast-moving hot gas and debris flows may occur. If you experience ashfall, stay indoors, use protective masks, and ensure your food and water supplies are securely covered to prevent contamination,” the organization said.
The recent events came right after days of consistent volcanic activity from Mayon, with several episodes of minor Strombolian activity taking place on Friday.
