Alert Level 3 is still in effect over Mayon Volcano

The lava flow of Mayon Volcano in Albay has reached as far as 3.8 km down one gully in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Saturday.

Mayon Volcano continues to have lava effusion, and on Friday, from 12 a.m. up to Saturday 12 a.m., the lava flow down Basud gully was up to 3.8 km, it said.

Meanwhile, the lava flow at Bonga gully reached up to 3.2 km, while it was up to 1.6 km down Mi-isi gully, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin, according to a report by Carlo Mateo on Dobol B TV.

There were episodic minor strombolian activity and short-lived lava fountaining, it added.

Thirty-nine volcanic earthquakes were also recorded on Friday. These included 21 volcanic tremors lasting from 1 to 44 minutes long.

Meanwhile, 376 rockfall events were also observed.

A crater glow continues to be fairly seen by the naked eye, PHIVOLCS said.

The volcano also emitted 2,147 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday, it added.

Moderate plumes rose up to 200 meters above the crater before drifting in the west-southwest, west-northwest, and west directions.

PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) remains in effect at Mayon Volcano.

It said entry into the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and flying aircraft close to the volcano should not be allowed.

Mayon Volcano poses possible hazards such as the following, PHIVOLCS said:

  • rockfalls or landslides or avalanches;
  • ballistic fragments;
  • lava flows and lava fountaining;
  • pyroclastic density currents;
  • moderate-sized explosions; and
  • lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.
