A temporary detour bridge in Santo Domingo, Ilocos Sur collapsed on Sunday after an allegedly overloaded truck crossed it, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.

The Kaliwet Detour Bridge in Barangay Nalasin gave way after a 20-ton 10-wheeler truck loaded with boulders passed over it despite a 5-ton load limit, according to initial findings.

In a statement, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said teams have been deployed to assess the damage and manage the situation on the ground.

The collapsed structure was serving as a temporary crossing while a permanent bridge is under construction and expected to be completed within the month.

The DPWH said personnel were already stationed in the area to manage traffic at the time of the incident.

Authorities have since established a temporary access route with a 20-ton capacity after completing embankment works, allowing vehicles to pass while clearing operations continue.

The collapse comes amid a series of similar incidents involving DPWH-maintained bridges, as well as a broader corruption controversy linked to government public works projects.

The agency said it would hold the truck operator accountable for violating load restrictions.

It also urged motorists to strictly follow load limits to prevent similar incidents and ensure public safety.—MCG, GMA News
