PNP: 7 arrested, P13.3M in smuggled cigarettes seized in 2 Mindanao operations
Seven men were arrested and over P13.3 million worth of smuggled cigarettes were seized in two operations in Lanao del Norte and Agusan del Norte over the weekend, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
In a statement on Sunday, the PNP said a checkpoint operation conducted on May 8 in Barangay Samburon in Linamon, Lanao del Norte led to the arrest of five male suspects and the confiscation of 289 boxes of smuggled cigarettes worth P11.56 million.
Authorities also recovered four vehicles believed to have been used in the illegal transport of the contraband.
The following day on May 9, police operatives conducted an anti-smuggling operation in Jabonga, Agusan Del Norte that resulted in the apprehension of two male suspects.
Authorities seized 2,311 reams and 35 packs of smuggled cigarettes valued at P1.8 million, as well as a vehicle used in moving the goods.
PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the operations are proof of their sustained drive against illegal trade activities that undermine legitimate businesses and government revenue collection.
“Illegal smuggling operations weaken lawful commerce and fuel other criminal activities. The PNP will continue to strengthen enforcement efforts and hold accountable those involved in these unlawful schemes,” Nartatez said.
“These accomplishments show that relentless police presence and sustained enforcement actions can significantly disrupt illicit trade networks across the country,” he added. — JMA, GMA News
