OVP holds relief ops for Mayon Volcano unrest victims

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) said Wednesday it has initiated a three-day relief operation for families affected by the increased volcanic activities of Mayon Volcano, which resulted in ashfall over several towns in Albay province.

The OVP said its Disaster Operations Center (DOC) is extending humanitarian assistance to affected residents, particularly displaced families now staying in evacuation centers.

The ongoing relief operations include distributing food packs, hygiene kits, blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, slippers, expandable water jugs, and other essential items for evacuees.

The OVP also said the DOC is coordinating with local government units and concerned agencies, such as local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils, to help assist affected communities.

Mayon Volcano is currently under Alert Level 3, showing an intensified or magmatic unrest.

Hazards such as rock falls, lava flows and lava fountaining, pyroclastic density currents, moderate-sized explosions, and lahars during rainfall may also occur.

Entry into the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone of Mayon Volcano is not allowed. Flying any aircraft close to the volcano is likewise prohibited. —AOL, GMA News
