51 volcanic earthquakes recorded at Mayon Volcano —PHIVOLCS
Mayon Volcano in Albay had 51 volcanic earthquakes on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Saturday.
This number includes 30 volcanic tremors lasting from 2 to 45 minutes), PHIVOLCS added in its bulletin.
There were also 399 rockfalls and six pyroclastic density current (PDC) signals in the same period.
Lava continues to flow out of the crater down to the Basud (3.8 km), Bonga (3.2 km) and Mi-isi (1.6 km) gullies.
PHIVOLCS said episodic minor strombolian activity and short-lived lava fountaining were also observed.
A crater glow continues to be visible to the naked eye.
On Friday, 1,345 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were recorded emitted by the volcano.
Moderate plumes were also observed rising out of the crater then drifted southwest.
PHIVOLCS said Mayon Volcano is still on Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest / Magmatic Unrest).
It reiterated that entry into the six-km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and flying aircraft close to the volcano should not be allowed.
Mayon Volcano poses possible hazards such as the following, PHIVOLCS said:
- Rockfalls or landslides or avalanches;
- Ballistic fragments;
- Lava flows and lava fountaining;
- Pyroclastic density currents;
- Moderate-sized explosions; and
- Lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.
