Magnitude 5.5 aftershock rocks Glan, Sarangani – PHIVOLCS

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake rocked Glan, Sarangani late Monday night, a week after the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit off the coast of Sarangani on June 8.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the tremor was logged at 11:30 p.m. of June 15.

Its epicenter was 05.67°N, 125.27°E, or 18 kilometers south 24° east of Glan with a depth of 44 kilometers.

It was initially logged as magnitude 5.8 but later downgraded to magnitude 5.5.

PHIVOLCS said the earthquake was tectonic in origin. It is an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit off the coast of Sarangani last week.

Intensity V was felt in Sarangani, Davao Occidental. Kiamba in Sarangani, and in General Santos City.

Intensity IV was felt in Don Marcelino and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; Alabel, Malapatan, and Malungon in Sarangani; T’Boli and Tupi, South Cotabato; and in Isulan and Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity III was felt in Koronadal City, Lake Sebu, Santo Niño, Surallah, Tampakan, and Polomolok in South Cotabato; and in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity II was felt in Kidapawan City, Cotabato; Banga and Norala, South Cotabato; and in Bagumbayan, Columbio, and Lebak in Sultan Kudarat. Intensity I was felt in M’lang, Cotabato.

Meanwhile, Intensity V was recorded in General Santos City while Intensity IV was logged in Sarangani, Davao Occidental; Malungon, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato; and in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity III was recorded in Digos City, Davao del Sur; Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Maasim and Malapatan in Sarangani; and in Koronadal City, Surallah, and T’Boli, South Cotabato.

Intensity II was logged in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Kidapawan City, Cotabato; Banga, Norala, Santo Niño, and Tantangan, South Cotabato; and in Bagumbayan, Columbio, and Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity I was recorded in Malitbog, Bukidnon; Davao City; and Maitum, Sarangani.

PHIVOLCS said no damage or aftershocks are expected from Monday night’s earthquake. — JMA, GMA News
