Magnitude 5.0 aftershock jolts waters off Sarangani

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani on Saturday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

In its earthquake bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the tectonic quake occurred at 6:51 p.m., with its epicenter located about 75 kilometers southeast of Balut Island in the municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

The earthquake had a depth of 22 kilometers.

PHIVOLCS said the tremor was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 offshore Sarangani earthquake and the magnitude 6.5 offshore Davao Occidental earthquake that struck in June 2026.

Instrumental Intensity II was recorded in the municipalities of Kiamba and Malungon in Sarangani.

Instrumental Intensity I was logged in the municipalities of Maitum and Malapatan in Sarangani; T'Boli, South Cotabato; General Santos City; Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; and Digos City, Davao del Sur.

No damage or aftershocks were expected from the magnitude 5.0 earthquake, according to PHIVOLCS. — MCG, GMA News
