Magnitude 5.8 aftershock jolts off Balut Island in Davao Occidental

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck east of Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

PHIVOLCS said the earthquake was an aftershock of the June 8, 2026 magnitude 7.8 offshore Sarangani earthquake and the magnitude 6.5 offshore Davao Occidental earthquake.

The aftershock occurred at 4:18 p.m. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 9 kilometers.

The quake was felt at Intensity IV in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental. PHIVOLCS said no damage is expected from an Intensity IV earthquake, although aftershocks may continue.

At 4:50 p.m., a magnitude 5.0 aftershock struck the same area. PHIVOLCS said it was also linked to the June 8 earthquakes.

The succeeding aftershock was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 5 kilometers. It was felt at Intensity III in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.— MCG, GMA News
