Davao barangay declares state of calamity

A barangay in Davao has declared a state of calamity following the combined effects of cyclone Kiyapo and the Southwest Monsoon.

In a "24 Oras" report from Jandi Esteban, flooding was recorded also in Ilocos Norte, Batangas, and several other areas.

Barangay Los Amigos in the Tugbok District, Davao City declared a state of calamity because of the intense flooding.

At least 80% of the barangay citizens were affected by the floods, according to barangay captain Roberto Ballarta.

Meanwhile, at Bangka, Davao City, 15 classrooms at the Leon A. Garcia Elementary School were flooded, affecting 400 students. Classes will resume on August 3, Monday, according to the school principal Jayson Barnes.

In Maguindanao del Sur, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, para-social workers can be seen wading into waist-deep floods to help residents after several local rivers overflowed.

Kiyapo and the southwest monsoon triggered widespread rains across the country, which killed at least three people, according to the Office of Civil Defense.

Around 295,066 people across the country have been affected by Kiyapo and the monsoon rains. —LDF, GMA News
