‘Danger level’ heat index expected in 7 areas on May 6, 2026

A “danger level” heat index is expected in seven areas in different parts of the country on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the state weather bureau said.

According to PAGASA’s 5 p.m. forecast on Tuesday, the synoptic stations in the following areas are expected to record a heat index of between 42°C to 45°C.

45°C

  • Tacloban City, Leyte

43°C

  • Cuyo, Palawan
  • La Granja, La Carlota, Negros Occidental

42°C

  • Bacnotan, La Union
  • Aparri, Cagayan
  • Virac (Synop), Catanduanes
  • Iloilo City

PAGASA classifies heat indices between 42°C and 51°C as under the danger category. These may cause heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

The heat index reflects how hot a human body feels by combining air temperature and relative humidity.

When temperatures are too high, the body struggles to regulate its internal temperature, which can lead to a rise in body heat and strain on vital organs such as the heart and kidneys. If not addressed, it may result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the provincial government of Agusan del Sur are tightening health and safety protocols for the 2026 Palarong Pambansa to protect over 20,000 athletes, coaches, and officials from heat-related risks and other emergencies.

Among these measures are stricter hydration protocols, assured water supply in all venues, and game schedules moved to cooler late afternoon and evening hours to reduce heat-related health risks among student-athletes.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said austerity measures will also be observed throughout the games, but without compromising athlete safety or the quality of event delivery.
