The low pressure area (LPA) being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has developed into a tropical depression, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Tuesday.

As of 3 p.m., the tropical depression was monitored 1,360 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao.

It has maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kilometers per hour.

PAGASA said the tropical depression is moving almost stationary.

The tropical cyclone may enter PAR on Thursday afternoon or evening, May 28, and will be given the local name "Domeng."

It is expected to reach typhoon category on Saturday, May 30, over the Philippine Sea.

"This weather disturbance is less likely to make landfall over the country. However, it may make a close approach to Extreme Northern Luzon. The highest tropical cyclone wind signal that may be raised during the passage of this tropical cyclone is Wind Signal No. 1," said PAGASA.

"This tropical cyclone will also enhance the Southwest Monsoon this Saturday (May 30)."

According to its 24-hour weather forecast issued at 4 p.m., the southwesterly windflow will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Zamboanga Peninsula, BARMM, Soccsksargen, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Palawan.

Meanwhile, the trough of the tropical depression is forecast to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over the rest of Mindanao.

The localized thunderstorms, on the other hand, might bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

PAGASA warned of possible flash floods or landslides due to heavy rains or severe thunderstorms in the said areas.

The maximum temperature recorded, based on data from the PAGASA Weather Station in Science Garden, Diliman, Quezon City, was 35.5°C at 2 p.m., while the minimum temperature was 28.4°C at 5 a.m.

Sunrise in Metro Manila on Wednesday is expected at 5:26 a.m. —VAL/VBL, GMA News
