Outdoor hospitals, shaken communities as Mindanao earthquake toll hits 41

Doctors treated patients in tents set up under a scorching sun on Tuesday—including helping a young mother give birth—as the death toll from a major earthquake that collapsed buildings topped 40.

Thousands remained displaced and more than 450 injured following the magnitude-7.8 quake that struck off the southern island of Mindanao on Monday, according to national and local disaster agencies, with four people now believed missing.

In hardest-hit Sarangani province, some areas remain accessible only by helicopter while fears of aftershocks were slowing rescue efforts, local officials told reporters at a Tuesday briefing.
 

Displaced GenSan residents forced to stay in vacant lots after Mindanao earthquake

Some displaced residents in General Santos City were forced to stay in vacant lots after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake Monday destroyed their homes. 

In a report of Emil Sumangil on “24 Oras” on Tuesday, several houses in a subdivision in Barangay Lagao were rendered almost unlivable due to the damage they sustained.

“Ayun bumagsak talaga ayan ang tiles namin, tapos ito yung kusina namin… nabasag na mga plato namin… sira na talaga yung bahay namin, sir” Alice Baba, a former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) said.
 

Kiko Pangilinan seeks P15-B additional funding for Mindanao earthquake response

Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan has filed a bill seeking an additional funding of P15 billion to support relief and rehabilitation efforts in the areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore Sarangani in Mindanao on Monday. 

“This bill seeks to appropriate Fifteen Billion Pesos as supplemental funding to augment the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (NDRMFF) for relief, recovery, rehabilitation, repair, and reconstruction efforts in areas affected,” Senate Bill No. 2259 read.

“This supplemental budget will support the restoration of schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, irrigation systems, power and transport facilities, housing, and local government infrastructure. It will likewise provide assistance to farmers, fisherfolk, and other sectors whose livelihoods have been adversely affected by the disaster,” the bill added.  

OPAPRU mobilizes aid for ex-rebels affected by Mindanao earthquake

The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) has activated its disaster response measures to assist former rebels and their families who were affected by the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Sarangani.

In a statement on Tuesday, Presidential Adviser Mel Senen Sarmiento said OPAPRU has been coordinating with local disaster response teams and local government units to verify the status of former rebels who remain unreachable due to damaged communication lines.

He added that the agency is also coordinating with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and other concerned agencies to ensure that former rebels and their families receive relief assistance and psychosocial support services. 

BIR extends tax deadlines for areas affected by Mindanao earthquake

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) extended to June 30, 2026 the tax filing, payment, and document submission deadlines for taxpayers registered in the revenue district offices (RDO) of General Santos City, Sarangani, and South Cotabato.

Under Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 62-2026, the deadlines are extended for taxpayers covered by RDO No. 110 and RDO No. 111.

Taxpayers covered by this memorandum “shall not be subjected to the imposition of penalties, surcharges, and interest, provided that the concerned tax returns, payments, and submissions are made within the extended period,” the BIR said. 

GMA Kapuso Foundation to share relief goods to 5k families hit by Mindanao earthquake

GMA Kapuso Foundation is expected to distribute relief goods to about 5,000 families affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit off the coast of Sarangani in Mindanao.

“Gusto lang namin i-inform kayo na ongoing na ang repacking ng Kapuso Foundation of relief goods. Kumpleto na lahat ng ipamimigay natin. Nandiyan tayo sa GMA GenSan mismo,” said GMA Kapuso Foundation EVP and COO Rikki Escudero-Catibog in Super Radyo dzBB.

(We just want to inform you that the Kapuso Foundation's repacking of relief goods is already ongoing. Everything we are going to distribute is complete. We are right there at GMA General Santos City.) 

Woman's caesarian operation in Koronadal postponed due to magnitude-7.8 earthquake

The scheduled cesarean section of an expectant mother in Koronadal, South Cotabato was deferred after Monday's magnitude-7.8 earthquake jolted the city and multiple areas in Mindanao.

Video by Maria Kaycee Cassandra Watson showed that she was about to undergo a cesarean section at the Dr. Arturo P. Pingoy Medical Center when the earthquake occurred, according to a report Monday by Jonathan Andal on State of the Nation.

Transmission lines hit by magnitude 7.8 Mindanao earthquake fully restored —NGCP

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Tuesday announced it has completed the restoration of all power transmission lines toppled by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in southern Mindanao.

With this, the NGCP said that “power transmission services were fully restored in South Cotabato, Sarangani, and General Santos City at 1:38 p.m., June 9, 2026.

“NGCP assures the public that it continues to closely monitor the situation in the area,” the grid operator said.

Most roads in Mindanao spared from structural damage after 7.8 earthquake, says DPWH

Most roads and bridges in Mindanao are free from structural damage following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake, according to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon. 

“Ongoing na yung repair, minor lang yung mga semento lang na hindi naman structural, medyo bumigay nang kaunti pero… yung structure, yung pinaka-importanteng parts nung bridge ay intact,” Dizon said as he inspected roads and bridges in Davao City.

(The repair is already ongoing, it's just minor—just the cement that isn't structural gave way a little bit, but... the structure, the most important parts of the bridge, are intact.)

Gatchalian bloc to donate 1 month's salary to Mindanao earthquake victims

Members of the Gatchalian-led Senate majority bloc on Tuesday said they will donate a month's worth of their salaries to aid the victims of the Mindanao earthquake.

In a joint statement, the senators expressed solidarity with the quake victims.

“The Senate New Majority stands with the families and communities in Mindanao who are now facing the painful work of rescue, relief, rebuilding and recovery after the powerful earthquake,” the statement reads.

The lawmakers committed to donating a month of their salaries as they called on the Cayetano bloc to join their efforts.
