The number of non-structural fire incidents in Davao City more than doubled in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the number of cases in the same period in 2025.
From the start of 2026 until April 28, the Davao City Fire District recorded at least 265 non-structural fire that included mostly grassfire and rubbish fire.
And with the intense heat experienced these days, authorities warned the weather may cause fires.
Because of this, the fire district urged residents not to build fires or engage in open burning like building a fire in pits, barrels, or landfills.
“As much as possible tigilan na po natin ‘yun lalo na ngayon walang masyadong ulan napakahirap apulahin and pag lumalaki ang apoy, nagiging uncontrollable na siya,” said FS Insp. Frances Sendrijas, spokesperson of the Davao City Fire District.
To avoid fire, the fire district advised the following:
- Avoid burning trash. Instead, segregate garbage properly.
- Keep combustible materials properly.
- Keep dry leaves and crop residue away from heat sources.
- Avoid throwing cigarette butts anywhere.
- Clean surroundings of dry leaves or grass that may catch fire.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand on standby to use in case a fire breaks out.
