The Catholic Church in Jaro, Iloilo has called on the faithful to take part anew in the White Ribbon Movement as the church and civil society groups continue to call for accountability and end to corruption in the Philippines.
The church urged parishioners to wear white; attend Mass; or attach a white ribbon on one’s clothes, on vehicles, and gates of houses on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
Rev. Fr. Angelo Colada, director of the Commission on Social Communications of the Archdiocese of Jaro, said the church expresses its protest “in a prayerful manner.”
“Ginagawa natin ito in a prayerful manner. Ang simbahan, ang pamamaraan natin is ang pagdarasal,” Colada said.
A resident, Miguel Beria, believes corruption is the root cause of the suffering of Filipinos as government, time and time again, fails to provide even the basic services effectively.
“Male-maletang pera ang ninananakaw nila. Ngunit pumunta ka sa mga ospital, ang mga tao maaga pa nakapila na upang maka-avail ng libreng gamot. Sa halip na nakawin, kung ipinaparating ang pera sa mga mahihirap na nagpapagamot sa ospital?” he said.
Another resident, Rigel Panaligan, believes corruption in the Philippines can be addressed through collective action.
He said corruption in government persists because the people stay silent.
“Nagiging ganyan sila dahil nakikita nila na tameme yung mga tao. Pero kung meron tayong boses sa lipunan, mapipigilan natin yung korapsyon,” he said.
Colada agrees.
“That’s why ang panawagan ng pagbabago, hindi nakadepende sa mga lider kungdi sa bawat isa sa atin,” he said.
He said Filipinos can’t help but lose hope but it is the hope that initiatives like the White Ribbon Movement can get the people’s attention.
