At least 65 barangays in Iloilo City were flooded following continuous rains evening on Monday, August 17, 2026.
Based on data from the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), up to 1,570 individuals affected with 701 needed to be evacuated.
“Matindi ng ang pagtaas ng tubig, matindi talaga. Hanggang dibdib namin kagabi,” said Lanie Lachica, one of the evacuees.
According to CDRRMO, up to 160-165MM of rain was dumped on the city in just six hours.
“Kapag ganyan ng ang sistema, nga 160, siguro mga two weeks pa ang ulan sa normal,” said Engr. Ronaldo Naragdao, head of the PAGASA Iloilo station.
CDRRMO said flood in several areas, even those with floodwaters that reached the chest, subsided fast but flood lingered in other areas because the water did not have a place to drain into.
“Actually, mabilis ang pag-subside sa mga malalim talaga pero may areas kasi na wala outlet kaya medyo matagal ang pag-subside,” said Darwin Joemil Papa, operations head of CDRRMO.
And because several areas in the city were still flooded in the morning, face-to-face classes had to be suspended.
In-person classes were also suspended in six towns, as well as in Guimaras province.
The suspension of face-to-face classes affected 150,000 students.
