Two GMA reporters snag wins at DOH's health reporting awards

Claire Delfin and Patricia Denise Chiu.
Three rows of mothers strapped to their newborn babies make up a section of Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital’s normal delivery ward.

“Human incubator sila,” a nurse explained. At the Kangaroo Mother Care section, these premature and underweight babies cling to their moms as joeys would to their mother kangaroos.

This 2012 feature by GMA News Online news producer Patricia Denise Chiu on Fabella Hospital’s low tech method on postnatal care is one of the 10 stories recognized by the Department of Health for the Parangal sa mga Kwentong Kalusugan Pangkalahatan.

“By telling their stories, of their struggles and little successes in life, our friends in the media will be powerful instruments in getting the message across. Needless to say, we should have healthy citizens to be able to build empowered communities,” said DOH Assistant Secretary Dr. Eric Tayag through a release.

GMA news reporter Claire Delfin also won for her story on severe malnutrition for GMA News Online.

GMA News TV's Reel Time and Investigative Documentaries also won respectively for episodes “Silang Wala sa Mapa” and “Nutrition.”

DOH received 114 entries on universal healthcare for Parangal sa mga Kwentong Kalusugan Pangkalahatan, with winners from print, radio, television and online categories, and additional special awards for bloggers. Entries were “rated for their coverage of the overall theme, content, and overall technical quality.” — Roehl Niño Bautista/VC, GMA News
