14K people preemptively evacuated from Habagat floods

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Saturday reported that about 14,000 people have been preemptively evacuated due to threats of flooding brought by the rains from the enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

"As of this morning, nagkaroon tayo ng ulat na 14,000 na katao na po ang nag-evacuate bilang pag-iingat sa posibleng pagtaas ng baha o pag-apaw ng ilog sa kanilang communities," NDRRMC spokesperson Mark Timbal said at the Laging Handa public briefing.

(We had a report that 14,000 people have evacuated as a precaution against possible rise of floods or rivers in their communities.)

Timbal said evacuation is ongoing in Marikina City as authorities monitor the water level in Marikina River.

As of 10 a.m., a total of 3,077 families or 13, 225 individuals were in evacuation centers in Marikina City.

In Quezon City, residents in Barangay Tatalon and seven other barangays were assisted in evacuating by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region and the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Evacuation was also conducted in Occidental Mindoro and Rizal.

At least 1,700 individuals evacuated in the municipalities of Taytay, San Mateo and Rodriguez in Rizal, the NDRRMC said. Meanwhile, in Cainta, more than 300 individuals evacuated, according to the Cainta Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

A number of individuals were already at evacuation centers in their respective local government units.

"We have more than enough relief support for our fellow citizens," Timbal said.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC assured the public that minimum health standards, including physical distancing and sanitation, will be observed in evacuation centers amid the threat of the Delta coronavirus variant.

On the other hand, disaster management councils in Calabarzon are looking into whether residents could return to their homes as the alert level at Taal Volcano was lowered from 3 to 2.

Several areas in Luzon have been affected by continuous monsoon rain brought about by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.

According to state weather bureau PAGASA, the weather condition will continue to affect the country on Saturday as Typhoon Fabian exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but continued to enhance the Habagat.

Malacañang on Saturday said it is monitoring the situation and funds are on standby for those affected by the weather disturbance. —LBG/KG, GMA News
