Magat Dam opens gates to release water


Magat Dam in Isabela had some of its gates opened on Sunday morning to release water.

Six gates of Magat Dam in Isabela were still open at 12 meters at 6 a.m., data from PAGASA showed.

The water in Magat Dam’s reservoir reached 191.60 meters at 6 a.m. on Saturday, which was just a few meters away from the dam’s spilling level of 193 meters.

One gate was first opened on Saturday, then these became four then six.

On Sunday at 6 a.m., the water level was at 191.32 meters.

At 9 a.m. on Sunday, only four gates of Magat Dam were open, the National Irrigation Administration-MARIIS-DRD Flood Forecasting and Warning System Dam Operation (FFWSDO) said.

Magat Dam's water reservoir level was at 191.21 meters at 9 a.m.

The water level at Buntun River meanwhile was at 11.25 meters at 9 a.m.

Angat Dam

Meanwhile, the water level of Angat Dam in Bulacan reached 213.60 meters at 6 a.m. on Sunday, which is above the spilling level of 212 meters.

PAGASA hydrologist Edgar Dela Cruz on Saturday said Angat Dam and other dams may also possibly release water as their water levels rose. 

The weather bureau said moderate to heavy rains which may be intense at times will be experienced on Sunday over mainland Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Aurora, Quezon, Bicol Region, and Kalayaan Islands due to Vicky and the tail-end of a frontal system (Shear Line).

Meanwhile, light to moderate and at times heavy rains meanwhile will be felt over Babuyan Islands, Metro Manila, the rest of Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and MIMAROPA. —KG, GMA News
