Dolly de Leon longlisted for the BAFTAs
Filipino actress Dolly de Leon has been racking up awards and nominations left and right!
For her performance in the movie, "Triangle of Sadness,” de Leon has been longlisted for Best Supporting Actress at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards 2023, Britain's equivalent of the Academy Awards.
The list will be subject to another round of voting on January 19 to narrow it down to six nominees, before it airs a month later on February 19.
De Leon will be going up against tough competition: Angela Bassett ("Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"), Jamie Lee Curtis ("Everything Everywhere All At Once"), and Carey Mulligan ("She Said").
But that's not all. De Leon, 53, was also just included in British Vogue's 30 World's Most Famous Stars 2023 Hollywood Portfolio, which lists "actors at the top of their game."
Speaking to the magazine, de Leon said the best advice she's ever been given is to "Always remember that the work can never be taken away from you. Maybe I’ll do another project after this or this will never happen again, but the work will never go away."
De Leon makes the cut with the likes of Oscar winner Cate Blanchett ("The Aviator"), Oscar-nominated actresses Michelle Williams ("Brokeback Mountain") and Kate Hudson ("Almost Famous") and bonafide global stars like Sadie Sink ("Stranger Things").
It's all in good timing, it seems, as De Leon competes for a Golden Globe Award this week. She is the first Filipina to be nominated for a Golden Globe Best Supporting Actress trophy. The winner will be chosen on January 11 (Manila time).
In December, she already bagged the trophy of the same category at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards 2022, having tied with actor, Ke Huy Quan ("Everything Everywhere All At Once").
Speaking to GMA News Online, de Leon said "Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think this would happen."
"The farthest I ever had in terms of dreaming was having a list of all the filmmakers and actors I’d like to work with - like a wish list. The list is still with me and the goal is still to work with these great artists," she continued.
The film, "Triangle of Sadness,” revolves around a group of elite passengers and the crew on an eventful cruise. De Leon plays Abigail, a toilet manager, who is stuck with the rich strangers. Actor Woody Harrelson ("Hunger Games") also stars in the film.
The movie received an eight-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival last year and went on to win the festival's prestigious prize, the Palm d'Or. The movie has also been drumming up Oscar buzz.
