Vice Ganda names two legendary Tamaraws as favorite UAAP players
The Unkabogable Superstar Vice Ganda headlined the UAAP Season 89 Kickoff Show last Saturday and joined the festivities as her school, Far Eastern University (FEU), hosts this season.
With FEU boasting a rich sports history and Vice Ganda being a known sports fan herself, one might ask: Who are her favorite UAAP athletes of all time?
Vice Ganda named two legendary Tamaraws: Johnny Abarrientos and Rachel Anne Daquis.
“Abarrientos, for me he is one of the greatest athletes that FEU was able to produce. He almost made it to the NBA. One of the most legendary PBA players, that’s Johnny Abarrientos,” Vice Ganda said in a mix of English and Filipino on Saturday.
Abarrientos was a two-time UAAP champion in 1991 and 1992.
He was also the league’s Rookie of the Year in 1989 and Most Valuable Player in 1991.
The NBA stint Vice Ganda was referring to came in 1997, when Abarrientos’ camp reportedly held discussions with NBA agents about joining the Charlotte Hornets’ preseason camp.
“In volleyball, it’s Rachel Anne Daquis, who until now is still playing in the PVL,” she added.
Daquis played for FEU from 2004 to 2009 and led the Lady Tamaraws to a UAAP title in Season 70 in 2008. FEU has also retired her No. 3 jersey in her honor.
