PNP initial findings say 'strong current' carried Ateneo student-athletes in drowning incident

The Philippine National Police Regional Office 3 (PNP PRO 3) on Monday released its initial findings on the drowning incident that claimed the lives of Ateneo de Manila University basketball student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

Ateneo on Monday announced the passing of Baterbonia and Adili due to a drowning incident during a teambuilding activity in Aurora.

In a statement, the PNP PRO 3 said investigations regarding the incident are ongoing, but “initial findings indicate that the victims were swimming when they were reportedly carried by a strong current into deeper waters.”

The PNP PRO 3 also said personnel from the Dipaculao Municipal Police Station responded immediately upon receiving information about the incident and coordinated with concerned agencies for assistance.

“The victims were promptly transported to a medical facility; however, they were later declared dead by the attending physician,” the PNP PRO 3 said.

The PNP PRO 3 also asked the public to refrain from speculating as the probe continues and advised tourists to exercise caution during water activities and observe safety advisories in areas where strong currents may be present.

The police regional office also extended its sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims.

“During this difficult time, PRO 3 stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragedy,” it said.

Baterbonia was set to join the Blue Eagles as a rookie in UAAP Season 89, while Adili was a big man who played in UAAP Season 88.
