The Philippines' Tomohiko Hoshina fell to his South Korean counterpart Friday, at the 100+ kg event in men's judo, with Kim Sung-Min defeating him via ippon at the 3:57 mark for a 100-000 score, in the 2012 London Olympics. Kim was a heavy favorite entering the match, after winning the bronze in this year's Asian championships in Uzbekistan and last year's world championships in France. The South Korean also won gold in the past two world cups, held in Mongolia in 2011 and in South Korea in 2010. Hoshina now joins the rest of the Filipino contingent who have been eliminated. Last Wednesday, archer Mark Javier was defeated by American Brady Ellison, who earlier won a silver medal in the team event. Filipina swimmer Jasmine Alkhaldi finished 34 out of the 48 participants in the 100m freestyle, far from the top 16 that will move on to the semifinals round. On Tuesday, Rachelle Anne Cabral also failed to make it through the elimination round of the women's individual archery event after falling 7-1, to her Russian opponent, Inna Stepanova, while skeet shooter Paul Brian Rosario finished 31st in a pool of 36 in the eliminations, far from the top six that got through to the next round. Last Monday, Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz was eliminated even after posting the second best performance in the snatch event, after she was unsuccessful in all three attempts in the clean and jerk. Filipino swimmer Jessie Lacuna was also eliminated last Sunday after finishing 36th among 40 competitors in the 200m freestyle event. Still to compete are Marestella Torres on August 7 for long jump, and Rene Herrera for the men's 5000m, and BMX rider Daniel Caluag on August 8. Boxer Mark Barriga, who won his opening bout against Italian Manuel Cappai, will compete on August 4 in the final 16 of the men's light fly 49 kgs against Kazakhstan's Birzhan Zhakypov. - AMD, GMA News
