DepEd to tap LGUs for distribution of printed learning materials

The Department of Education (DepEd) will seek the help of local authorities in the  distribution of  printed learning modules to students to facilitate distance learning amid the coronavirus pandemic, an education official said Wednesday.

Education Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio said distance learning can be done through printed self-learning modules and television and radio programs if a student does not have access to online learning platforms.

“Ang nakikita ko po kasi, mas marami talaga sa mga Pilipino ang walang internet,” he said.

While modular distance learning is an option for students with no internet access, San Antonio noted that the distribution of printed learning materials is another concern of DepEd.

“So magpapatulong po tayo sa ating mga local government officials, sa mga barangay, at katulong na rin po siguro ‘yung mga parent-teacher associations at ‘yung mga teleteachers natin,” he said, adding that Sangguniang Kabataan officials may also be tapped.

San Antonio also underscored that parents will need to take on a more active role in their child’s learning due to the pandemic.

“May pagbabago rin po sa papel ng magulang ‘pag ang pinag-uusapan natin ay ang pagkakatuto ng kanilang mga anak… Sisiguraduhin ng DepEd, magbibigay po tayo ng pagsasanay para alam naman nila kahit paano kung paano magbigay ng angkop na tulong,” he said.

“Occasionally, ‘yung mga kasamang guro natin ay puwede ring puntahan ‘yung mga estudyante na alam niyang kailangan ang suporta niya,” San Antonio added.

Malacañang announced that the enrollment period for public school students will begin on June 1. 

The upcoming school year will start on August 24 and end on April 30 next year.

DepEd earlier clarified that the opening of classes does not mean a physical return to the classroom for students and teachers. -NB, GMA News
