Briones congratulates next Education Sec. Sara Duterte on VP inauguration

Outgoing Education Secretary Leonor Briones congratulated Vice President-elect Sara Duterte, who is set to lead the Department of Education (DepEd) under the Marcos administration, ahead of her inauguration on Sunday, June 19.

"Together with the entire Department of Education (DepEd) family, I congratulate you on your inauguration on Sunday, June 19, 2022, as the new Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines," Briones said in a statement dated June 18.

Duterte will take her oath of office on Sunday afternoon at San Pedro Square in Davao City.

The secretary also said she anticipates turning over the leadership of DepEd to Duterte, who was tapped by President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to be his Education chief.

“I look forward to turning over to you the leadership of DepEd. That the department will be concurrently led by no less that the Vice President speaks to the highest priority that education will be given under the incoming administration,” Briones said.

“During my term, with utmost support by the President, we have laid the foundations for DepEd to address the challenge of decisively elevating the quality of Philippine basic education. I have no doubt that under your leadership, the country will see the fruition of basic education’s pivot to quality, enhanced by your new insights and innovations,” she added.

Briones earlier said they were looking forward to working for a smooth transition of the new leadership, indicating that Duterte “has a wide understanding of the problems of the education sector, especially in the grassroots level.”

On her 44th birthday last month, Duterte asked the public to love the DepEd.
