23 dead to Habagat, cyclones Luis, Maymay - OCD

At least 23 individuals reportedly died due to the adverse effects brought by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay, the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) said Sunday.

Data as of 6 a.m. showed that of the 23 recorded deaths, 15 were from Benguet. It was followed by Rizal and Batangas with three from each province. One fatality was also logged in Quezon Province.

The cause of deaths were due to landslides, drowning, rockslide, a fallen tree, and electrocution.

Meanwhile, 17 persons were reportedly injured due to the combined effects of the weather disturbances. These were recorded in Ilocos Sur, Benguet, Abra, Rizal, and Cavite.

Further, authorities logged three reported missing individuals. All of which are in Batangas.

Information from the OCD showed that the weather disturbances affected Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, CALABARZON, Cordillera Administrative Region, Metro Manila, and MIMAROPA.

A total of 1,410,800 families or 4,903,086 persons were affected.

In 407 evacuation centers, there were 9,101 families or 31,456 persons are seeking temporary shelter.

The Habagat and the two typhoons also damaged 1845 houses, 178 of which were totally destroyed.

Moreover, the financial damage to agriculture has amounted to P689,662,316.

PAGASA earlier said that the Habagat will continue to affect Luzon and the western section of Visayas on Sunday, with scattered rains and thunderstorms in several areas. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA News
