Baguio City and Quezon City have so far received the highest amount of rainfall during the two weeks of Southwest Monsoon-induced rains, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Thursday.

Information from PAGASA showed that Baguio City has accumulated 1950.8 mm of water from August 1 to August 18 —202.5% more than what is normal within that time frame.

Meanwhile in the Quezon City Science Garden, PAGASA recorded 1143.3 mm of rain within the same time period. This is 202.1% more than the normal amount of rainfall in the city.

On Monday alone, Quezon City was hit with 201.7 mm of rain in just five to six hours.

PAGASA said that this means that Quezon City and Baguio received 2 months of average rainfall just in August.

Other areas like Dagupan in Pangasinan, Iba in Zambales, and Occidental Mindoro were also hit with rains 1.5 times more than their monthly average in August.

The Southwest Monsoon hammered many parts of the country with rain, triggering widespread floods and landslides.

In Baguio alone, at least 10 people died in a landslide. The joint effects of cyclones Luis, Maymay and the Southwest Monsoon have killed at least 29 people, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The inclement weather has affected over 6.5 million people. —LDF, GMA News
