Phivolcs logs 31 aftershocks after M6.0 Eastern Samar quake
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded 31 aftershocks as of 8 a.m. Tuesday following the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck Eastern Samar on Monday.
Phivolcs said none of the aftershocks, which ranged from magnitude 1.2 to 3.2, were felt. Of these, 16 were plotted.
The initial quake struck at around 2:09 p.m. and was located about 20 kilometers north 65 degrees east of San Julian. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of about 56 kilometers, according to Phivolcs.
State seismologists earlier warned that both damage and aftershocks were possible following the tremor.
Intensity V, considered strong shaking, was reported in parts of Leyte, including Tacloban City, while lower intensities were felt in areas as far as Sorsogon and Surigao del Sur, indicating the wide reach of the quake across the Visayas and nearby regions.
Phivolcs said no tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake, but advised the public to remain alert as aftershocks may continue in the coming days.—MCG, GMA News
