More uson, rockfalls observed in Mayon Volcano in past 24 hours — PHIVOLCS

Mayon Volcano logged nine pyroclastic density current signals or uson and 428 rockfalls in the past 24 hours, according to a bulletin of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Monday.

These records are higher compared to the five uson and 351 rockfalls reported on Sunday.

The daily sulfur dioxide emission from Mayon also increased from 908 tonnes on Saturday to 1,771 tonnes on Sunday, according to PHIVOLCS.

Lava effusion with lava flow was observed on Basud (3.8 kilometers), Bonga (3.2 km), and Mi-isi (1.6 km) gullies.

A total of 20 volcanic earthquakes including 19 volcanic tremors lasting up to 127 minutes were recorded over the volcano.

A fair crater glow was observed.

A weak emission of plume was seen from the volcano, which was drifting southwest.

A short-term deflation of the edifice with shorter-term inflation on the northeastern flank was observed on Mayon, according to PHIVOLCS.

Alert Level 3 is maintained over Mayon Volcano, which means there is an intensified unrest or magmatic unrest.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public that entry into the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone remains strictly prohibited due to persistent hazards.

The agency also warned against flying aircraft close to the volcano.

Among the possible dangers are rockfalls, landslides, ballistic fragments, lava flows, lava fountaining, pyroclastic density currents, and moderate-sized explosions.

Lahars may also occur during periods of heavy and prolonged rainfall. — RSJ, GMA News
