4 dead, 6 missing in Baguio landslide — Mayor Magalong

Four people were confirmed dead while six others remained missing after a landslide buried three houses in Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio City, Mayor Benjamin Magalong said Monday.

In a Facebook post, the Baguio City Public Information Office (PIO) identified the fatalities as a nine-year-old boy, a nine-year-old girl, a 17-year-old female student, and a 56-year-old man.

The information was based on a report submitted to Magalong by Baguio City Police Director Colonel Ruel Tagel as of 5:35 a.m. Monday.

Six people remained missing, including children aged three and eight.

Search, rescue, and retrieval operations continued at the landslide site despite persistent rains, according to the city PIO.

"It’s a very challenging area with many risks and hazards. We have about 150 rescuers deployed there, working on a rotation basis," Magalong said in an interview posted on the Baguio City PIO’s Facebook page.

"We are monitoring the nearby mountainside because it is very steep. The soil there is also very loose. We’re bringing in more equipment to move the slab because that is the most challenging part of the operation," he said.

Three people—a 27-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman, and a 77-year-old pastor—were rescued alive and brought to a hospital for medical observation.

Authorities said the landslide occurred at around 7 p.m. Sunday amid continuous heavy rains. It struck three houses and affected five families.

Magalong said residents in nearby high-risk areas had already been evacuated.

He also said 13 other landslides had recently been recorded in Baguio City due to the heavy rains, bringing the total to 14.

"That’s the 14th one. And it’s not over yet. We’ll likely receive more reports today," Magalong said. — MCG, GMA News
