Tropical Depression Luis moves west; 3 Luzon areas under Signal No. 1

PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over three areas in Luzon after a low pressure area developed into Tropical Depression Luis on Saturday evening.

These areas are:

  • Polillo Islands
  • the eastern portion of Camarines Norte (Daet, Talisay, Paracale, Jose Panganiban, Capalonga, Vinzons)
  • the northern portion of Catanduanes (Pandan, Caramoran, Bagamanoc, Panganiban)

At 10 p.m., Luis was located 360 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte, with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h.

It was moving westward at 15 km/h.

PAGASA said the center of Luis is forecast to remain over the Philippine Sea, although a westward shift in its track, including a possible landfall or close approach to Northern Luzon, cannot be ruled out.

"Luis will likely remain as a tropical depression in the next 24 hours. By Monday, August 3, the tropical cyclone is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm while moving over the sea east of Central Luzon. As it begins to move generally northeastward, a weakening trend will likely begin and will be downgraded to remnant low by Wednesday, August 5," PAGASA said in its 11 p.m. Saturday bulletin.

PAGASA said the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and the periphery of Luis will bring strong to gale-force gusts over the following areas (especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds):

  • Sunday, August 2: Marinduque, Romblon, Caluya Islands, Siquijor, Southern Leyte, Camiguin, and Dinagat Islands
  • Monday, August 3: Most of Luzon and Visayas, Lanao del Norte, Camiguin, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands
