Ang “Filipiñana” ang opisyal na pambato ng Pilipinas para sa Best International Feature Film category sa ika-99 na Academy Awards o Oscars.
Sa isang anunsyo nitong Linggo, inihayag ng Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) na pinili ang pelikula ng isang komiteng binubuo ng mga eksperto sa industriya na inaprubahan ng Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
Sinuri ang mga pelikulang napabilang sa shortlist batay sa husay sa sining, kaugnayan sa kultura, at potensiyal na maisulong ang international campaign.
"In selecting 'Filipiñana,' the Committee considered the integrity of the film, the producers’ commitment and capacity to fulfill the requirements of the Oscars campaign, and the film’s ability to embody the pride of Philippine cinema," ayon sa FAP.
"The Committee also recognized the film's strong visual style, but more importantly its incisive examination of class, power, labor, and social realities, as well as its growing international profile," dagdag nito.
Sa direksiyon ni Rafael Manuel, unang nanalo ang “Filipiñana” ng special jury award sa Sundance Film Festival noong Pebrero.
Sinusundan ng pelikula ang isang golf-tee girl na nagngangalang Isabel sa isang Philippine country club. Naaakit siya kay Dr. Palanca, ang presidente ng club. Kalaunan, natuklasan ni Isabel ang karahasang nagaganap sa club at ang koneksiyon nila mula sa nakaraan.
Nagkaroon ng world premiere ang “Filipiñana” noong 2020 sa Berlinale International Film Festival bilang bahagi ng shorts competition. Nanalo ito ng Silver Bear Short Film Jury Prize sa naturang festival.
Ginawaran din ito ng Grand Prix sa Encounters Film Festival, Best Short Film sa Festival Du Nouveau Cinema De Montreal, Best British Short Film sa British Independent Film Awards, Best Student Short Film sa Molodist Kyiv International Film Festival, at Best Film in the Asia International Competition at George Lucas Grand Prix for Best of Show sa Short Shorts Film Festival Asia.
Nagsilbi itong closing film ng Cinemalaya Film Festival ngayong taon at sinundan ito ng pagpapalabas sa mga sinehan. —Nika Roque/FRJ GMA News
