Who is Elena-Gabriela Ruse? Alex Eala's opponent in the Cincinnati Open Round of 64

Alexandra “Alex” Eala will take on Elena-Gabriela Ruse as she begins her campaign in the Cincinnati Open on Saturday.

Eala is returning to action after her Round of 16 exit at the Canadian Open, where she fell to Belinda Bencic, 6-4, 6-0.

In Cincinnati, however, world No. 20 Eala received a first-round bye after entering the tournament as the 17th seed.

The 29-year-old Ruse of Romania, meanwhile, defeated Magda Linette, 6-0, 6-3, in the first round of the WTA 1000 event.

Ruse is currently ranked No. 74 in the world, with a career-high ranking of No. 51, which she achieved in May 2022.

At the Canadian Open in Toronto, Ruse reached the Round of 64, while she advanced to the Round of 32 at her home-country event, the Iași Open. She also competed in the first round of Wimbledon.

Ruse, however, enjoyed a strong run in Bad Homburg, reaching the semifinals before falling to Karolina Muchova.

The Romanian has also competed multiple times in all four Grand Slam tournaments. Earlier this year, she reached the Round of 32 at the Australian Open, matching her run at the 2024 US Open.

This will not be the first meeting between Eala and Ruse. The two previously faced each other in the 2024 US Open qualifiers, where the Romanian defeated the Filipina ace, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
