The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said it has recorded 1,055 aftershocks as of 7 a.m. Tuesday following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.

According to PHIVOLCS, 301 of the aftershocks have been located, while 21 were felt by residents in affected areas.

The strength of the recorded aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.3 to 6.7.

PHIVOLCS released a plotted map of earthquakes using data from the General Santos Seismic Station (GSP) and the Don Marcelino Seismic Station in Davao Occidental.

The reported death toll from the earthquake that struck offshore Sarangani on Monday increased to 37, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said on Tuesday.

Search, rescue, and retrieval operations are ongoing.

Magnitude 7.8 Mindanao earthquake death toll now 37 —OCD

The reported death toll from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore Sarangani in Mindanao on Monday has increased to 37, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Tuesday.

In an update, OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Mariano said that as of 6 a.m., 33 deaths were reported in Soccsksargen (18 in Sarangani, 12 in General Santos City, and 3 in South Cotabato). Four deaths meanwhile were reported in Davao Region.

Interviewed on GMA News’ Unang Balita on Tuesday, OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo said most of those who died were hit by falling debris.

A total of 456 persons were injured and four individuals remained missing.

The earthquake has affected 17,689 families or 77,186 individuals across affected areas in Mindanao.

Search, rescue, and retrieval operations remain focused on General Santos City and Sarangani, among the hardest-hit areas, according to Castillo.

“Kung tutok doon sa nangyari kasi ang tinitingnan natin ngayon, General Santos City and then 'yung Sarangani, so dito sa Region 12. So doon ang tutok ng ating mga search, rescue, and retrievals,” he said.

(In terms of focus, what we are looking at now is General Santos City and then Sarangani, so here in Region 12. So that is where our search, rescue, and retrievals are focused.)

General Santos City was already placed under a state of calamity.

“Pero ganu'n pa man, some other areas also ay nandoon din 'yung ating mga responders,” Castillo added.

(But even so, our responders are also present in some other areas.)

Responders have been deployed to assist in ongoing operations.

Based on initial assessments, nine bridges and 19 roads were damaged. The OCD also estimated infrastructure damage at more than P900 million based on initial inspections.

Authorities recorded 1,889 damaged houses, of which, around 1,500 were totally destroyed.

Castillo said no areas have so far been officially declared isolated despite damage to roads and bridges, adding that relief supplies had already been prepositioned in various locations.

Generators and fuel were already sent to hospitals and other critical facilities affected by power outages.

General Santos International Airport sustained damage from the earthquake, prompting the cancellation or rerouting of flights. Military aircraft, government and humanitarian flights however were allowed by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to use the General Santos Airport upon the order of the Department of Transportation.

Many residents have remained in open spaces amid continuing aftershocks and concerns over the structural integrity of their homes.

The government is considering establishing temporary shelters and tent cities to accommodate displaced residents while damage assessments and recovery efforts continue.

Power supply restoration near completion after disruptions following the Mindanao earthquake

Power was almost fully restored in areas affected by the strong earthquake that hit Sarangani and neighboring areas, Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said.

This is because two power plants have been fixed, transmission lines were restored, and power utility companies went back online.

In a statement, Garin said that at least four power plants, two transmission lines, four private distribution utilities, and 8 electric cooperatives encountered problems following the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Maasim, Sarangani and nearby areas early Monday morning.

"As ordered by the President, the energy family activated our response teams in order to deploy as many men and women from all over the country to help restore the areas," said Garin.

"As of last update, 2 power plants have been fixed, transmission is partially restored, 4 private distribution utilities and 7 electric cooperatives are back online," she added.

Garin said SOCOTECO 2, South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative Inc. remains under total power interruption, or blackout.

"We are working hard and fast to bring back electricity and we ask for patience and understanding. First, we assess and then we restore when it is safe," she assured.

In a press release, the Department of Energy (DOE) with the National Electrification Administration (NEA), and National Power Corporation (Napocor) mobilized rapid response teams to assess energy infrastructure and power restoration in areas affected by the earthquake.

"Based on initial reports, power interruptions are being experienced in several areas, particularly within the franchise areas of South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative Inc. (SOCOTECO 2), South Cotabato I Electric Cooperative Inc. (SOCOTECO I), Sultan Kudarat Electric Cooperative (SUKELCO), Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (NORDECO), Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC), Cotabato Light and Power Company (CLPC), and neighboring localities, affecting around 864,000 households," the DOE said. — BAP, GMA News

CAAP: GenSan Airport open for 'limited operations' for gov't, military, aid flights

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Monday ordered the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to lift the suspension of airport operations at the General Santos Airport to allow military aircraft, government and humanitarian flights following the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit off the coast of Sarangani.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez issued the directive at 2 p.m. of Monday, June 8 in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s order for government agencies to swiftly respond to the calamity.

In a statement, Lopez said the General Santos Airport must be kept open for disaster response and relief efforts, for employees who will assist in the relief operations, and others who may want to bring relief goods.

“Ang utos ng Pangulo dapat mabilis at tuluy-tuloy tayong makatugon sa pangangailangan ng mga kababayan nating apektado ng lindol. Kailangan maagap tayo sa pag-responde para agarang makatulong sa mga kababayan natin,” he said.

(The President’s order is for the swift and continuous response to the needs of our countrymen affected by the earthquake. We must be prompt in responding to help our countrymen.)

Lopez also told the CAAP to ensure the integrity of the airport’s structures to guarantee the safety of the passengers and airport personnel.

He said all airport and CAAP personnel must be accounted for, adding that the DOTr will extend assistance to airport employees affected by the earthquake.

“Bukod sa dapat matiyak natin na hindi nagtamo ng matinding damage ang airport, ang primordial concern natin din dito ay safety ng ating mga pasahero at mga tauhan. Dapat matiyak din natin na OK ang ating mga kasamahan sa trabaho at ang kanilang pamilya kasi marami talaga ang apektado,” Lopez said.

(Aside from ensuring that the airport did not sustain severe damage, our primordial concern is the safety of our passengers and personnel. We should also see to it that our colleagues at work and their families are okay, because many are affected.)

In a separate Facebook post, the CAAP said the General Santos Airport is now open for limited operations following the earthquake.

It said landing and takeoff operations are “currently limited to government, military, and humanitarian flights.”

“A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is in effect from June 8 at 3:00 PM until June 11 at 6:00 PM. Passengers are advised to coordinate with their respective airlines regarding the status of their flights,” the agency added.

Earlier in the day, the CAAP temporarily suspended operations at the General Santos Airport to make way for an assessment of the air navigation facilities, equipment, and operational capabilities to ensure the safety and integrity of the airport’s structures.

At 7:37 a.m. Monday, a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani, damaging infrastructure and disrupting utility services.

It also prompted the issuance of a tsunami warning for nearby areas, as well as the suspension of classes and work in government offices across several areas.
