Inaprubahan ni Pangulong Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. na palawigin ng 90 araw ang mandatory SIM registration na nakatakda na sanang magtapos sa Miyerkules, Abril 26, 2023.
Inatasan ni Marcos ang Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) na ipaalam sa publiko ang ginawang pagpapalawig sa registration.
Hanggang nitong Linggo, Abril 23, mahigit 82 milyong SIM cards umano ang naiparehistro, na katumbas ng 49.31% ng kabuuang active SIMs hanggang Disyembre 2022, o 168,016,400 total number ng active SIMs sa bansa.
Sa 82 milyong registered SIMs, mahigit 37 milyon ang mula sa Globe, mahigit 39 milyon sa Smart at mahigit limang milyon mula sa Dito.
Target ng DICT na 70% ng mga active SIM ang mairehistro sa 90-day extension.
Sa ilalim ng SIM Card Registration Act, itinakda ang deadline sa mandatory SIM registration sa Abril 26, 2023. Gayunman, may probisyon sa batas na maaari itong palawigin kung kakailanganin.
Sinuportahan naman ni Senador Grace Poe, principal sponsor ng batas sa Senado ang desisyon na palawigin ang SIM registration.
Sinabi ng senadora na dapat kumilos ang telecommunications companies at bumaba sa “grassroots” para makapagparehistro maging ang mga nasa malalayong lugar.
“As most telcos have been enjoying vast profits from their services, they have the corresponding obligation and the necessary resources to track down their SIM users and to widen the opportunity for registration,” ayon kay Poe, chairperson ng Senate public services committee.
“Both [National Telecommunications Commission] and telcos must double their efforts in reaching out to subscribers in rural and remote areas,” dagdag niya.—FRJ, GMA Integrated News
