Nagbitiw na si Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez bilang Speaker ng Kamara de Representantes ngayong Miyerkoles. Aniya, ang pagbaba niya sa puwesto ay para mailayo ang kapulungan mula sa mga paratang ng katiwalian na ibinabato laban sa kaniya.
Bago nagbitiw, nakipagpulong si Romualdez sa kaniyang pinsan na si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., nitong Martes, kasama si House Majority Leader at Ilocos Norte Representative Sandro Marcos, na anak ng pangulo.
“The longer I stay, the heavier that burden grows on me, on this House, and on the President I've always sought to support. And so, after deep reflection and prayer, I have made a decision today, with a full heart and a clear conscience, I tender my resignation as Speaker of the House of Representatives,” saad ni Romualdez sa harap ng mga kongresista.
“I do this so that the Independent Commission on Infrastructure may pursue its mandate freely and fully, without doubt, without interference, without undue influence,” dagdag niya.
Inihayag din ng dating Speaker na suportado niya ang "independent scrutiny" kaugnay sa alegasyon ng katiwalian sa flood control projects.
“Let me be clear: the House of the People will never condone corruption, whether in public works, local governance, or any other area of government service. Allegations of wrongdoing must be investigated thoroughly and addressed decisively,” sabi ni Romualdez.
“I fully support initiatives for independent scrutiny and fair prosecution to ensure that those who betray public trust are held accountable under the law,” patuloy niya.
Sa nakaraang pagharap ng contractor na si Pacifico Discaya sa pagdinig sa Infra Committee sa Kamara na nagsisiyasat sa katiwalian sa flood control projects, sinabi niya na wala silang direktang transaksiyon kay Romualdez at maaaring ginamit lang ang pangalan niya. -- mula sa ulat ni Llanesca T.
