Nakilala sa kaniyang natatanging pagganap bilang si Prinsesa dela Cruz sa premyadong medical drama na "The Pitt", nagbahagi ang Filipina Hollywood actress na si Kristin Villanueva tungkol sa paglikha ng tunay na representasyon ng mga Pilipino sa pandaigdigang entablado.

Sa "The Pitt," gumanap si Prinsesa dela Cruz bilang isang Pinay nurse na nagtatrabaho sa emergency department sa Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

"When I got the audition, and I saw her name, I mean just the name alone, Princess dela Cruz, I was like, they did the research. And yeah, they just keep writing her three-dimensionally," sabi ni Villanueva sa isang panayam sa Sparks of Joy ng GMA Pinoy TV.

Noong Pebrero 2026, natanggap ng HBO television series ang Actor's Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Sa pagninilay-nilay sa kaniyang role, sinabi ni Villanueva na nagpapakita ng iba't ibang personalidad ang karakter ni Princess.

"They are so specific on this person, on this Filipina nurse. She's unique in that she's not your typical stereotype. She's not just in the background saying, 'Yes, doctor.' You see a brilliant range of personality traits," sabi niya.

Sa kabuuan ng kaniyang karera, sinabi ng aktres na bagama't bumuti ang representasyon sa Hollywood, marami pa ang kailangang baguhin.

"I think from the last two decades that I've been an actor, there has definitely been improvement, but we still have a long way to go," ani Villanueva.

Ganito rin para sa representasyon ng mga Pilipino, ayon kay Villanueva, dahil naghahangad pa ring mabigyan ng boses at mga pagkakataon ang mga Pilipino sa Hollywood.

"No, I don't think Filipinos are well-represented in Hollywood consistently, but we're definitely, you know, cracking the door open," sabi ni Villanueva.

"I think we can aspire to writing with specificity. You got to be so specific, and through that specificity, your piece, your show will reach a more universal audience," dagdag niya.

Iconic roles

Sa 20 taon niyang pagiging aktor, iba't ibang karakter na ang ginampanan ni Villanueva, kung saan kinakailangan ang ilan sa mga ito na ilabas niya ang kaniyang pagiging Pilipina.

Sa panayam, ibinahagi ni Villanueva ang mga hindi niya malilimutang role na nagtampok sa kaniyang mga talento.

"I did this indie film called Viper Club where I also play a Filipino nurse and all my scenes were with Miss Susan Sarandon," sabi niya.

Ang Viper Club ay isang drama na ipinalabas noong 2018. Ginampanan ni Villanueva ang karakter ni Carmelyn, isang supporting role sa palabas.

Higit pa sa pelikula, nagbida rin si Villanueva sa teatro.

"For theater, oh gosh, I just have a lot of favorites. There's this show called, 'The Courtroom'," pagbabahagi niya.

"The Courtroom is about a Filipino woman who migrated to the States but accidentally votes when she only had a green card. So then the whole show, you follow her appeals in court," dagdag niya.

Ginampanan ni Villanueva ang lead role na si Elizabeth Keathley, sa New York theater.

Nakalista ang "The Courtroom" sa The New York Times' Best Theater of 2019.

"As the piece follows her from one courtroom to another, what is most palpable is the suspense—how deeply invested the audience becomes in the future of this gentle woman," pagbabahagi ni Villanueva sa kaniyang website, na sinegunduhan ang isang review mula sa The New York Times.

Bukod sa mga karakter na Pilipino, binanggit din ni Villanueva ang kaniyang role bilang si Sweet Charlotte sa Netflix show na "Bonding," na inilarawan niyang "I had a blast doing."

Sa regional at international theater, lumabas si Villanueva sa mga classic play gaya ng "Romeo and Juliet," na ginagampanan ang lead role ni Juliet Capulet.

"Every time I get to play a Shakespeare ingénue, those shows always have a special place in my heart because, I mean, the life that these characters get to live in three hours' time, it's pretty epic," dagdag niya.

Manila girl

Ipinanganak at lumaki si Villanueva sa Maynila. Lumipat siya sa Washington, D.C. sa edad na 15.

Sa kaniyang paglaki, hindi pa niya pinangarap noon na maging isang aktor.

"When I was younger, I wanted to go to law school and become a political pundit. But yes, I feel like I was a very late bloomer," sabi niya.

Gayunpaman, sa murang edad, sinabi ni Villanueva na gusto na niya noon pa man ang pagsusulat, lalo na kung kaya niya itong bigkasin nang malakas.

Nagtapos siya sa Estados Unidos ng kaniyang Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting sa SUNY Purchase, kung saan ginawaran siya ng Chair's Award for Achievement in Acting.

Nakalagay sa kaniyang acting resume bilang kaniyang special skills ang "[fluency] in Tagalog, [playing the] ukulele, stage combat, baby crying, and cat in heat," bukod sa iba pa. —VBL GMA News
