Inihayag ni Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III na suportado niya ang pagbuo ng kagawaran na tututok sa kapakanan ng mga overseas Filipino worker dahil sa ito ang nais ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte.
Sa panayam ng GMA News TV "Balitanghali" nitong Huwebes, sinabi ni Bello na ayaw sana niyang magkomento sa naturang usapin dahil maapektuhan nito ang pinamumunuan niyang kagawaran.
"Ayaw kong mag-comment because it affects my department," saad niya. "But when the President, if he wants a department, we have to follow the president."
Nakapaloob sa DOLE ang Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) at Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), na kapwa may kinalaman sa mga OFW at sa kanilang pamilya.
Sa nakaraang State of the Nation Address (SONA) ni Duterte, hiniling niya sa Kongreso sa gumawa ng batas na lilikha sa Department of Overseas Filipinos.
"This Administration’s malasakit at serbisyo program has, of course, reached the Filipinos who labor in foreign lands. The milestone signing of the Bilateral Labor Agreement with Kuwait in 2018 is a testament of my commitment to stop abuses inflicted on our overseas Filipinos," anang pangulo.
"To ensure their welfare, protection and their access to government services, the establishment of the Department of Overseas Filipinos will sufficiently address this particular need," dagdag niya.
Ayon kay Bello, may direktiba sa mga opisyal ng Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO), na dapat subaybayan nila at tulungan ang mga OFW sa kanilang nasasakupan.
"Pag hindi nila inalagaan (ang OFWs), agad-agad, ire-recall po namin. I just recalled one in Kuwait dahil 'di nag-report agad," saad ng kalihim. — FRJ, GMA News
